Department of Naval Science (Unit 73 - Massachusetts Maritime Academy)
The Department of Naval Science (DNS) staff are responsible for the administration and operation of the Strategic Sealift Midshipman Program (SSMP) unit at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The SSMP is a unique type of NROTC Unit that is only offered at the seven maritime schools, and has several key differences. DNS is comprised of Navy Active Duty personnel and, during the spring semester, a Navy Reserve Strategic Sealift Officer (SSO) on active duty orders to serve as a program liaison . The staff are also considered part of the faculty and teach four academic courses throughout the year as part of the program curriculum. Active duty staff members use their experience and knowledge to develop and mentor college students within the program into knowledgeable, professional Naval Officers to serve our nation's interests. The DNS staff builds upon this foundation with the assignment of a SSO on active duty for work orders during the spring semester to provide relevant and up-to-date information for senior midshipmen just prior to thier commissioning. Those SSOs interested in applying for the SSMP liaison position should contact the SSO Program Office for further details and timelines. In addition, DNS staff also work with the SSO Program Office and faculty members at Massachusetts Maritime Academy that are also members of the SSO Program.
